  1. If administration spent one quarter of the time strengthening non cognitive subjects as it does on cognitive subjects, then maybe you'll see real growth. It is tiresome to continue to hear about the Whose Line Is It Anyway approach to scoring schools, where the scores or in this case, Levels, don't really matter. It's the growth of individuals, the students, and each student has a name. That is what matters. Focus on students, not schools. If you do what is right for the student first, the school will improve dramatically. Until everybody wakes up and get on board with holistic teaching of students, the top performers will remain an exclusive club. The co-curricular offerings need a complete do-over. Unfortunately schools and teachers have to supplement life skills that are not being taught at home, and reinforce those that are. Concentrate on making school fun again rather than treating all subjects as a core competency requirement to get to the bonus round.

  2. BRIAN THE CAB DRIVER… or BRIAN THE “PRAB” DRIVER?Rumor has it that the Cab Driver takes his orders from PRAB. What are the orders, you ask? Stir up trouble among the parents. The more opting out, the more Level 4's we get. You know what that means… TURNAROUND! Hey, Brian, you want to make Swift a turnaround school? How about you TURN AROUND that cab?Soon, more schools will be Level 4's. The entire school system will be Level 5. And we will all be taking his TAXI to another district when the contract is ripped to SHREDS! We'll be calling you in a few months for a ride, Brian. Thanks for your help.Sincerely, The New Bedford Educator. Underappreciated and Disrespected by you and everyone else.

  3. This system is guided by a superintendent who makes sure SHE has enough help. She now wants the paras gone. HayMac longer hours…teachers work easily 10-12 hour days as it stands now! Here's a idea, why don't we start asking the parents to be accountable for their children! It's not rocket science! Durkin and all her flying monkeys really are disgusting!

  4. Google shows a new bedford teacher average salary in 2013 was 72000. A KIPP school salary is 52000. About 800 teachers times 20k savings for the private operator. Minimum: A few extra million for when the opt out movement get us taken over. ( “they won't take us over” – Holyoke protesters, 2015)

  5. It was said in Holyoke: “We will never be level five.” Guess what? CINCO in Holyoke….If the small group of parents, aided/abetted by the PARCC Protester of Fairhaven who thinks she is the Jane Fonda of PARCC, they will take our entire district with us. Go back to Fairhaven! ….Better yet, get a job! Leave the New Bedford teachers alone with your rabble rousing!!!What a mess in this city they will cause. Thousands of teachers, out of a job, all to satisfy the High Priestess of PARCC of Fairhaven….

  6. I'm a teacher and I support what Furtado is doing to inform parents of their right to refuse. These tests have already cost us our jobs by deskilling our profession and soon being a big part of our evaluation. The use of test scores to judge teacher effectiveness is bogus. The zip code is a cheaper way to predict student success. Use testing dollars on more important educational resources.

  7. I posted about KIPP. Pay attention. No one is saying KIPP is good. Saying KIPP is waiting and watching and the opt out is giving them an opening. Or do you think that the radio guy and the Fairhaven lady care more about your contract that people who share that contract?

  8. i am not “starting a rumor” the standard times reported that the second round of interviews was complete and a final candidate was selected…i am a parent and i believe that the opt out information should be given to parents along with the info that the district may lose funding if enough kids do not take the test…

  10. Again–the MTA has a fantastic OptOut Toolkit on their website. If our state association supports the Opt Out Movement–so do I!

  11. How many jobs are lost at MTA following a takeover? Lol. Irony is, the Holyoke administration all just got fat jobs elsewhere. Teachers were led to slaughter by Gus
