The following is Mayor Mitchell’s response to St. John’s statements.
“I’m concerned that there are rumors flying now that are loosely based in fact, and that people should withhold judgment until they hear the details from the superintendent on Monday night. That’s not to say what’s happening now is not difficult … this is a very hard, but necessary transition.” he said.
Mitchell added that he stands by the superintendent’s decision.

  1. I've never seen a shred of evidence that concludes if you fire x% of teachers students outcomes improve x%……This is a political move and not a tried and true way to improve students achievement.

  2. The Mayor, Dr. Durkin, and the School Committee failed us. We didn't fail our school. Unfortunately the end result will be catastrophic for our kids.

  3. Did you notice the subliminal message about supporting PIA. It's a reference to his tool to shift blame and avoidance of Mitchell's role in this. It's a role he plays well. His shifty eyes scare me.

  4. It is all about saving money,,,getting rid of as many teachers on the top steps helps the bottom line ,then hiring new teachers at lower salaries frees up money for top level administrators…there needs to be a cap that no one makes more than 100,000$ in the schools system..Also an investigation has to occur how did those 2principals make so much money and those 2teachers …the standard times needs to investigate this.,,get an explanation..what exactly did they do to get the extra money..

  5. Mitchell's statement along with this form is a ploy to receive the public. He has the reputation of a snake with a forked tongue. He is covering himself and covers up misdeeds. He did, and still does this when we try to greive injustices against teachers.

  6. This is exactly what kenosha unified school district did two out of the last three years. The students suffered the most, and parents and the community are fed up. It is tearing the town apart, with children suffering. They truly believe that teachers, and their salaries are to blame, so getting rid of that will help their budget and views. This is why educators should have a voice in education- not politicians. The last time they set foot in a classroom was when they were students, yet they know what is best for our profession and our students. Give them a week in a classroom of their own and, if they make it the whole week, will be singing a different tune!

  8. Reputable districts value experience and higher education. They pride themselves on attracting and retaining highly-qualified, well educated teachers and utilize those assets to hire from within: Teachers to Leaders… Many great teachers left NBPS to be administrators in other districts. They did not want to invest here.

  9. The strategy here is divide and conquer by pitting teacher against teacher. Teachers will be afraid to speak out lest their name is added to the hit list.

  11. Mayor Mitchell should have checked with his boss Dr. Pia Durkin before making this stupid statement “that rumors are flying now that are loosely based in fact.” He along with the School Committee is blindly following the superintendent, and they are out to destroy the entire system. Mitchell check out your facts before you make statements just as you had to check out information before going into federal court.

  14. I am very disappointed in the City of New Bedford and the New Bedford School Department. Instead of looking within to failures of the administration they are punishing those whom the administration has put in an untenable position of scapegoats to that same failure. Fall on your “swords”, School Department. Resign.

  15. This woman is a joke!!! The teachers are NOT the problem!! The parents are the problem, this week I went to my sons school for a parent MCAS meeting ( to help parents understand the test and pushing us by keeping positive attitude with our children) grades 3-5, 2 classes of each grade with 20+ students each class, I'm so embarrassed to say only 7 parents showed up.. This superintendent thinks that laying off these Teachers will help solve the problem, these are great teachers that care, that EDUCATED me, they made a difference in my life.. How can we fix the problem when she wanted 50% decrease in suspensions ( geez lets just disrespect each other and not have any repercussions for it) our teachers are disrespected and pushed to their limits daily!!! Today's entitlement generation is not being taught proper moral because their parents don't care. Education does not end at finish of their school day we need to teach and learn with our children. In my opinion she needs to go, parents need to be more involved in their kids education.. It's a damn shame that our schools are going through this….

  16. I just don't understand why so many people just sit in their stuff instead of accepting the day and making a positive way to the future, no matter what it is. I accept and will do the best I can because I love teaching. Life always gives us challenges and I know I can grow from every challenge and recognize it's part of my journey.

  17. That is such a joke! Teacher's salaries are nothing, I have to work a part time job to make ends meet! I also pay taxes and help support those who won't work! How about the 187,000 Pia makes a year, how about the 160,000 position that was just hired in administration? I have a master's degree-I know people who just have an associates degree and make more money than I make-NOW THAT'S A JOKE!

  18. Our mayor is the worst education mayor this city has EVER had, Since he has become mayor, our school district has gone DOWN HILL. Under the Education Mayor's administration, New Bedford now has a Level 5 school and the high school is now a Level 4. Great job Mayor Mitchell. At the rate the school department is going with Durkin, you, and our weak S/C shortly the entire district will be a Level 5.We will remember this in the 2015 election year. Make sure your resume is up-to-date Mayor Mitchell and School Committee members

  21. I think most of you are missing the big picture here. You may not like Durkin and Mitchell land that's ok but if anyone thinks this wouldn't happen with a different pair leading the school system your all delusional. This freight train started before Mitchell and he has no choice but to do what the DOE tells him to do. New Bedford is a huge guinea pig for the DOE right now. When have you ever in your lifetimes in New Bedford had a school committee all be on the same page for every issue. NEVER!!!! They are neutered. They have zero say! They all pretend to get along because they have no choice. Wake up people! Even Morad knows that taxes have to be raised for the school system and she's super conservative and isn't making a fuss about it. Why? Because the DOE has New Bedford by throat and we are powerless to stop them .

  22. I call on the intellectual members of the School Committee to look at this whole process as a farce and call it such. Recant all the letters and let the teachers do their job with your support. Prove that you are truly in it for the kids and not just to balance a budget on teacher's backs for your fiscal irresponsibility of the past 6 years

  26. The person that wrote you're missing the big picture is absolutely right. This situation has been evolving for many years . It doesn't matter who the players are . It is the restructuring of public education . This is commonplace in the corporate world . The only difference is that education has now become big business..
